CPR Classes Augusta, GA. Do you know how frequently and for how long you pause during your cardiac resuscitations? One of the main determinants of survival is coronary perfusion pressure, the amount of blood in the heart when a compression is released. Every time compressions are stopped, for any reason, the coronary perfusion pressure quickly drops off, and it takes time to build it up again. So if you stop CPR for 10 seconds, it’s not ONLY that 10 seconds that the victim is not getting blood flow to the heart and brain, it’s 20, 30, or even 40 seconds because it’s that 10 second pause, plus the 20 to 30 seconds it takes to get the perfusion pressure back up again. This is why it is so critical to limit ALL pauses and to minimize the length of EVERY pause!
