CPR Class Augusta,GA. Instructors from CarePoint Resources in Opelika traveled to Xiamen, China, to provide healthcare provider CPR certification for the staff of a new hospital the last week of July.
CarePoint provided a week of on-site training for 24 staff members at a new 800-bed hospital being built by GuoYu Health Management Center in Xiamen. The GuoYu administration reached out to the Opelika business after deciding to get their physicians certified in American Heart Association basic life support for healthcare providers.
In addition to earning their basic life support certificates, the hospital staff also received instructor training, enabling them to teach certification classes to others in the area.
Randy Boone, CEO of CarePoint and Opelika firefighter, was first approached about the trip in March. Ya-Xiong Tao, an Auburn University professor, requested a quote for an on-site certification for some of his Chinese associates. Boone said he receives several requests for on-site certifications, so he sent over the quote, not expecting a trip to China in his future.CPR Class Augusta,GA.
“In the back of my mind I was thinking, ‘Man, what if this really is an offer to go to China?’” Boone said.
After receiving the quote, Tao informed Boone that GuoYu would provide airfare and lodging to have CarePoint travel to China to certify their staff. Boone then began planning for CarePoint’s first international certification class.
“Of course at that point my mind was blown,” Boone said.
To prepare, Boone and his staff helped GuoYu purchase the supplies for the course that weren’t able to be transported by plane. They also obtained all course materials in Mandarin to combat the language barrier. Tao also traveled with the instructors as an interpreter.
After a day of traveling, Boone and his staff split the hospital staff into two groups to complete basic life support training. Boone said the class went the smoothest he had seen in his nine years of teaching CPR. The staff was eager to learn and took full advantage of the training provided to them.
“To say that these students were prepared would be a severe understatement,” Boone said. “I literally think that they had memorized the student manual before we even arrived in town. And they were so eager. We’ll do classes and we’ll take breaks about every hour during our class just to stretch our legs. We would take a break, or what they call a tea break. As soon as they were done with their tea they would be back on the manikins, just practicing to make sure their skills were up to par.”
Lauren Kubik, an instructor with CarePoint, said she saw a “magic moment” on their second day of training after they had all passed their healthcare provider basic life support course. One student in the class was practicing when she was approached by the CEO of GuoYu’s wife.
“She got down on the floor with one of the other students, and I actually got it on video, one of the other students named Annie, teaching her how to do CPR right then and there,” Kubik said. “Randy said, ‘What are you doing?’ and I was like, ‘This is happening right now.’ … That was kind of one of those great moments to be a part of.”
Kubik also noted the eagerness of the students, adding that they had already been practicing on the manikins before CarePoint arrived in the country.
“It was a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Kubik said. “It was pretty amazing how warm and welcoming they were and how enthusiastic they were just about learning in general and then wanting to go out and share the knowledge as well. I guess it’s one of those things you kind of take for granted here in the U.S., just having the access and readily available education opportunities to anybody.”CPR Class Augusta,GA.
Though it was CarePoint’s first international trip, Boone said it will hopefully not be their last. GuoYu expressed interest in bringing CarePoint back to do their recertification in two years.
