Steps for Giving Child & Baby CPR

Learn the CPR steps for children and babies in our AHA-certified training sessions. Below is a quick guide to keep the basics fresh in your memory:

Before Giving CPR

  1. Check the Scene for Safety
    • Ensure the environment is safe before approaching the child or baby.
  2. Check for Responsiveness
    • For a child: Shout their name, tap their shoulder, and shout again.
    • For a baby: Shout their name, tap the bottom of their foot, and shout again.
    • Look for breathing or any obvious signs of life for no longer than 10 seconds.
  3. Call 911
    • If unresponsive and not breathing (or only gasping), call 911 immediately and retrieve an AED if available.

How to Perform Child & Baby CPR

1. Position the Child or Baby

  • Place them on their back on a firm, flat surface.
  • For children: Kneel beside them.
  • For babies: Position yourself at their side, ensuring stability.

2. Perform Chest Compressions

  • For a Child:
    • Place one hand (or two for larger children) in the center of the chest.
    • Push down about 2 inches at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute.
    • Allow the chest to fully recoil after each compression.
  • For a Baby:
    • Use two fingers or both thumbs just below the nipple line.
    • Push down about 1½ inches at the same rate.
    • Let the chest return to its natural position between compressions.

3. Provide Rescue Breaths

  • Tilt the head back using the head-tilt/chin-lift technique.
  • Blow into the child or baby’s mouth for about 1 second, ensuring visible chest rise.
  • If the chest doesn’t rise, reposition the head and try again.

4. Continue CPR

  • Repeat cycles of 30 chest compressions and 2 breaths until:
    • The child or baby shows signs of life.
    • EMS arrives and takes over.
    • An AED becomes available.
